Australian Activists file Legal Bid to Stop Gas Project
On Tuesday, 21st June Australian Conservation Foundation applied for an injunction to halt Woodside Energy’s Scarborough project, which would generate 1.37 billion tonnes of greenhouse emissions.
According to the Foundation, the Scarborough project (worth Aus$16 billion) located in Western Australia would escalate climate change by 0.0004 degrees Celsius. Even though the project is thousands of kilometres from the Great Barrier Reef, the resulting climate change will create a “significant impact” on the natural wonder.
The Foundation’s projections for the climate impact of Scarborough, drawn from research by non-profit Climate Analytics, were significantly higher than Woodside’s estimate of 878 million tons of emissions.
Woodside is set to “vigorously defend” itself against the court proceedings.
