Fighting Climate Crisis
Land conservation is an integral aspect of fighting the climate crisis. With this aim in mind, the Victorian government is planning to spend $31m on private land to create habitats for endangered wildlife and capture carbon.
This scheme is a part of the 20-year biodiversity strategy launched in 2017 which targets to eventually restore 200,000 hectares of private land. Species like the powerful owl, the southern brown bandicoot, and the southern greater glider could have an improved habitat.
60% of land in Australia was privately held but less than 2% of this area was managed for nature. Therefore such investments in private lands conservation were welcome to contribute towards net-zero carbons by 2050.
