Perth Charities face Fruit and Vegetable Shortage
Within the past few months, demand for food boxes in a Perth charity, “The Pantry”, has been spiralling at skyrocketing levels. The shortage of available fruits and veggies, has forced the charity to disburse processed foods or sugary foods.
Bev Woolhouse, chief executive of The Pantry, says supply chain issues and a shortage of fruit pickers to process “seconds” has reduced the amount of food available to be shared around. According to one of their suppliers, along with transportation issues, farm work is also being disrupted due to a seasonal worker shortage created by border closures.
Such supply chain issues affect the quantity of the food and the quality of the food.
Ms Woolhouse said it was difficult to justify paying rent for a facility when she felt she could not provide a quality service to Pantry WA’s clients.
