Kokoda Youth Foundation: Transforming Young Lives Through Challenge, Community and Values‑Led Growth

At NFP Business Services, we believe the not-for-profit sector is powered by organisations that create lasting impact in communities across Australia. As part of our ongoing series showcasing inspiring Australian NFPs, we are proud to feature the Kokoda Youth Foundation — an organisation dedicated to empowering young Australians through leadership, resilience, and education programs inspired by the spirit of Kokoda.

Through this series, we aim to shine a light on the incredible work being done by charities and community organisations that are changing lives, building stronger communities, and creating opportunities for future generations. We are honoured to recognise the Kokoda Youth Foundation and the important contribution they continue to make to Australia’s youth sector.

For more than two decades, the Kokoda Youth Foundation (KYF) has been a unique fixture in Australia’s youth support landscape — a charity built on the belief that authentic experiences, grounded in values and community, can shape confident, resilient young people who contribute positively to society. Its approach is inspired by the Spirit of Kokoda — the qualities of Courage, Endurance, Mateship and Sacrifice demonstrated during the 1942 Kokoda Campaign in Papua New Guinea — and applied in practical, transformative programs for young Australians.

In this blog on our series of showcasing NFPs who do impactful work we showcase the Kokoda Youth Foundation.

Origins and Philosophy: From Local Initiative to National Influence

Founded in 2004 on the Gold Coast by Doug and Anna Henderson, the Kokoda Youth Foundation began with a simple but powerful idea: take a story of courage and endurance from Australian history and use it to help young people face the challenges of modern life.

Drawing on the Kokoda Campaign’s legacy, the charity’s ethos rests on four core values:

  • Courage — stepping outside comfort zones and taking positive risks.
  • Endurance — committing to a journey, even when it becomes hard.
  • Mateship — building strong, respectful relationships.
  • Sacrifice — dedicating energy to something larger than oneself.

Rather than offering a typical counselling model, KYF uses experiential learning, outdoor challenges, mentorship and community service to foster meaningful growth. The idea is to support young people not only to cope with life’s pressures but to thrive, with confidence and resilience that endures beyond adolescence.

The Program Pathway: Supporting Young People at Every Stage

KYF’s suite of programs is tailored to different age groups and needs, structured to guide participants along a pathway of personal development and community engagement. All programs are fully funded and free for participants, thanks to donations and fundraising events.

Kokoda Challenge Youth Program (Ages 15–17)

At the heart of the Foundation’s work is the Kokoda Challenge Youth Program (KCYP), a nine‑month immersive life‑skills experience. Participants — known affectionately as ‘Kokoda Kids’ — commit to weekly endurance hikes, teamwork activities and community service. The program culminates in two major challenges:

  • A 96 km Kokoda Challenge hike that tests physical stamina and group cooperation.
  • A culturally and historically significant trek on the Kokoda Trail in Papua New Guinea, where participants walk in the footsteps of Australian diggers.

Through these experiences, young people learn persistence, leadership and empathy — qualities that strengthen their self‑belief and broaden their perspective on life.

On The Right Track (Ages 13–15)

Recognising that disengagement can begin early, On The Right Track (OTRT) is a school‑based initiative for younger teens who may be struggling with behaviour, attendance or motivation. Delivered in partnership with select high schools, OTRT combines structured physical challenge with mentorship and a 48km Kokoda Challenge event. It then reinforces learning through volunteer community service, helping participants reconnect with school and community life.

Digital Detox Program (Ages 12–14)

Responding to concerns about screen dependence and its effects on wellbeing, the Digital Detox Program offers an immersive eight‑day outdoor camp. Young people disconnect from technology in a supportive environment, taking part in adventure‑based activities and workshops that encourage healthier digital habits and emotional awareness. The program also includes aftercare support for families to help sustain positive changes.

Isurava Regional Reset Program (Ages 8–17)

In recent years, KYF has been chosen to deliver the Isurava Regional Reset Program across Queensland, an early‑intervention initiative for young people at risk of school disengagement or involvement with the justice system. Funded through the Queensland Government’s youth support strategy, this program combines outdoor experiential learning with mentoring, emotional regulation skills and family support, providing a structured pathway to more positive outcomes.

How the Foundation Works: Community, Mentorship and Outdoor Learning

KYF’s approach is distinctive for its emphasis on active, experiential learning. Rather than sit‑down workshops alone, young people are placed in real‑world challenges that demand teamwork, resilience and leadership. The outdoors — whether local trails or remote landscapes — becomes a classroom where young people test themselves, celebrate achievements and learn from setbacks.

The Foundation also places strong emphasis on:

  • Mentorship and support: Participants are guided throughout programs by trained leaders who coach, encourage and model positive behaviour.
  • Community connection: Volunteer service and engagement with local communities help young people feel valued and contribute beyond themselves.
  • Cultural awareness: Programs incorporate learning about Australia’s Indigenous history and diverse cultural heritage, broadening participants’ understanding of identity and belonging.

This blend of challenge, reflection and community service is designed to build resilience that lasts — equipping young people with practical skills for school, work and relationships.

Impact: Beyond the Challenge

Over 20 years, the Kokoda Youth Foundation has supported more than 1,300 teenagers through its programs, with many participants showing marked improvements in physical fitness, mental resilience, confidence and social connection.

While individual journeys are unique, common threads include:

  • Enhanced self‑confidence and motivation: Participants often report a stronger belief in their abilities and greater readiness to set and pursue goals.
  • Improved social skills and community engagement: Through teamwork and volunteering, young people build meaningful connections and a sense of purpose.
  • Greater resilience and coping strategies: Facing physical and emotional challenges helps participants develop tools to manage adversity in everyday life.

The Foundation’s work also contributes to broader community wellbeing by supporting schools, families and local networks, reinforcing positive pathways for young people at critical stages of development.

Community and Contribution: How Australians Can Help

KYF’s programs are made possible by donations, fundraising events and community support. The charity’s flagship Kokoda Challenge events attract participants and sponsors whose fundraising directly funds youth programs.

Support can take many forms:

  • Participating in Kokoda Challenge events across Australia.
  • Making one‑off or regular donations.
  • Supporting fundraising efforts in schools, workplaces and community groups.

Each contribution helps ensure more young Australians have access to life‑changing experiences anchored in values, resilience and connection.

In Summary: A Model of Youth Empowerment

The Kokoda Youth Foundation stands out for its holistic, values‑driven approach to youth development — one that combines challenge, learning and community engagement to foster resilience and purpose. By inviting young people to step beyond their comfort zones and engage in meaningful, supported experiences, KYF helps build a generation better equipped for life’s uncertainties. Its work resonates well beyond individual participants, strengthening families and communities across Australia.
